Suzuha Amane (阿万音 鈴羽, Amane Suzuha), later known as Suzu Hashida (橋田 鈴, Hashida Suzu), is a part-time employee for Yuugo Tennouji's CRT store. She is on a secret search for her future father in Akihabara. She enjoys riding her bicycle, appears to be at odds with Kurisu Makise.

She is in fact a time traveler from 2036 who, under the guise of John Titor, seeks to prevent SERN, at the command of the Committee of 300, from creating a Time Machine that will lead to a dystopian future. Although she is initially unaware of it, she is the daughter of Itaru Hashida and Yuki Amane.

In the Beta Attractor Field, where most of Steins;Gate 0 takes place in, Suzuha comes from a future ravaged by World War III with the mission of going back to the day of Kurisu's death so that Rintaro Okabe can prevent Kurisu's time travel thesis getting into the hands of Shouichi Makise and, in doing so, stop World War III and reach the Steins Gate World Line. She understands that Okabe's main motivation is to save Kurisu, however.

Appearance[]

Suzuha's physical attributes include pale toned skin, long brown hair, and a slim profile. She keeps her hair tied up in braids that hang over her chest. Her eyes are a bright yellow, however, in the anime as well as Steins;Gate 0, their color is significantly toned down, bringing them closer to a dull golden-brown color.

Alpha Attractor Field[]

In the Alpha Attractor Field, her outfit consists of a blue vintage jacket, black tight bike shorts, white socks, and black tennis shoes. Under her jacket, she wears a black sport bra. She also allows her braids to fall freely onto her shoulders.

Suzu Hashida

Alpha Suzuha at age 40.[6]

At age 40, her appearance is mostly unchanged. However, her visible wrinkles show her age. She now wears a white dress shirt over black pants as well as a bolo neck tie. As her illness worsened, she requires a cane to walk.

Beta Attractor Field[]

In the Beta Attractor Field, she initially wears a military combat uniform with a brown holster strapped to her chest, brown gloves and a black bandana tied over her left bicep. Six months later, she wears a black jacket over a blue turtle neck as well as green cargo pants and black combat boots. She keeps her braids tied up in circles around her ears. Beta Suzuha also appears slightly taller then her Alpha counterpart.

Steins Gate World Line[]

On the Steins Gate World Line, Suzuha's appearance is similar to her Alpha counterpart with the exception of her outfit. This version of Suzuha wears a white, short sleeved zip up shirt with black sleeves and sides under a red sweat jacket. She also wears a pair of biker shorts.

Personality[]

Alpha Attractor Field[]

A friendly, athletic girl who loves cycling and works part-time at the Braun Tube Workshop below the lab. Suzuha often comes across as overly familiar, but in truth she maintains a carefully measured distance from everyone. When something captures her interest, however, Suzuha's personality changes dramatically and she becomes aggressive and relentless, meaning she is a really straight type of person. She is also perceptive, as shown in her ending when she realized that Rintaro Okabe was time leaping.

Suzuha dislikes asking others for help, and will not reveal her own problems to anyone unless absolutely necessary. She also has a tendency to use uncommon or antiquated words in casual conversation.

Suzuha claimed to work with Yuugo Tennouji because of her interest in Braun Tubes, though she constantly slacks off by maintaining her bicycle whenever her boss is not around.

Due to the dystopian nature of her era, she is not accustomed to most things quite common in the 21st century such as corn, fireworks, and beef bowls and is easily excited to try everything out. This implies the truly cold desolate nature of her era that possibly prevented her from enjoying life. Even though she initially did not want to form friendships, likely because of her mission, in the end she was grateful that she was able to become part of Okabe's friend group. In reality she had wanted to become friends, but had tried convincing herself that those bonds would only hurt her.

After Okabe's D-Mail prevents Suzuha's suicide on some other Alpha World Lines, she went back in time to 1975 safely. Thanks to this, she became more wise and mature. She was very kind but more stern towards Shouichi Makise because of his inflated ego. Particularly his arrogance during the meeting between her, Makise and Yukitaka back in 1994, which escalated into an argument. Suzuha and Yukitaka were even willing to stop researching Time Travel together after Shouichi complicated matters.

During the anime, and somewhat in the game, it seems she has a strong dislike towards Kurisu due to Kurisu's contribution to the invention of the time machine and her assistance to SERN contributed to a desolate future. When Suzuha hears Kurisu has done something to Okabe, she turns serious and gets worried for him. In addition, when Okabe claims to be brainwashed or tortured, Suzuha becomes increasingly worried, truly believing something bad has happened to Okabe. Despite coming off as very relaxed and lazy, Suzuha actually values the completion of her mission highly. On one of the observed Alpha World Lines, Suzuha gets amnesia once she travels to 1975. When she recovered from her amnesia in 1999, she was overcome with guilt over not being able to fulfill her mission. The guilt was so overwhelming that over the next year, her mental state progressively worsened until she committed suicide.

Beta Attractor Field[]

This Suzuha is much less friendly and energetic then her Alpha counterpart. She is a serious and mission driven individual, she shows clear frustration at not being able to complete her mission and truly wants to save humanity from WWIII. As she has strong faith in her goal, Suzuha is even able to threaten to shoot Okabe in an attempt to have him try to save Kurisu. She even injures him when he tried to stop her and Mayuri Shiina from using the time machine.

All that being true, she still cares deeply for her friends and comrades. This also applies to her father-to-be, Itaru Hashida. While she is often annoyed by Daru's perverted nature and his lack of progress in his relationship to Yuki Amane, she does care for her father deeply. When she was desperate enough to try and force Okabe to go back to the past, Daru was the one that talked her down and got her to open up about her frustrations. After she was separated from Kagari Shiina in 1998, she used up most of the Time Machine's fuel to try and locate her. When it seemed like a brainwashed Kagari might use a knife to attack Daru, Suzuha, despite their previous relationship, threatened to kill her if she hurt him.

After waiting for six months for Okabe to change his mind and agree to go with her and being prevented from forcing him to, Suzuha became somewhat disillusioned with her mission. In stark contrast with her Alpha self, Suzuha admitted that a part of her would be happy if she got amnesia, forgot about her mission and lived a normal life in the past.

Her relationship with Yuki is somewhat awkward. She still thinks of Yuki as her mother, but because Yuki is unaware of the group's history with time travel, and because of possible "Butterfly Effects" and time paradoxes, Suzuha cannot reveal this fact to her. As a result, Suzuha tends to avoid her when possible.

Background[]

As she technically has not been born by the start of the story, Suzuha's background varies heavily depending on what world line she hails from.

Alpha Attractor Field[]

In the Alpha Attractor Field, for most of her life, Suzuha grew up in a dystopian world controlled by SERN. She was raised by her mother, but never met her father, never even learning his name, only that he was one of the creators of the resistance and built the FG204. Her mother was eventually assassinated by Kayano, a member of the Rounders. Suzuha eventually used the time machine to go back in time in order to prevent the horrible future. However, while she was suppose to go directly back to 1975, she instead stops in 2010 in hopes of meeting her father. Unfortunately, a miscalculation causes the FG204 to appear in the side of Radio Kaikan instead of the roof of the building.

Beta Attractor Field[]

SG0 - Kagari and Suzuha nter the Time Machine

Kagari and Suzuha enter the time machine.

In the Beta Attractor Field, Suzuha was born in the midst of WWIII. As the child of Itaru Hashida, who is rebuilding a time machine, she and her mother were constantly on the run from DURPA and Stratfo. As a child she saw her mother gunned down in front of her by and attack helicopter. The bullets tore through her mother's body and impacted Suzuha's chest, leaving scars. She survived to join her father in the resistance. Eventually her father finished the FG204 time machine and she went back in time with three missions: acquire an IBN 5100 in 1975, stop the Y2K problem in 1998, and convince Okabe to stop Shouichi Makise in 2010. These three things would prevent the circumstances that led to the war (as well as those that led to SERN's domination in the Alpha Attractor Field) and save the future. Before leaving, the base was attacked, forcing her to take Kagari Shiina with her.

After acquiring the IBN in 1975, she and Kagari went to 1998 to prevent the Y2K problem. While there, Alexis Leskinen's brainwashing in Kagari activates and she attacks Suzuha, shooting at her before leaving. Suzuha tried for a significant amount of time to look for her, using up most of the time machine's fuel in an attempt to find her, but was unsuccessful. Eventually giving up, she travelled to 2010 in an attempt to fulfill her final mission and stop Shouichi Makise, and help Okabe save Makise Kurisu's life.

Quotes[]

  • “Everyone needs a hand at some point or another, that's just how life works. Just make sure you're ready to lend a hand yourself when your number comes up.”
  • “She's... my enemy.” — To Rintaro Okabe, talking about Kurisu.
  • “This era is so peaceful. That's a wonderful thing... but it scared me. All I knew was the fight against SERN.”
  • “To rule time is to rule the world.”
  • “I'm really grateful to you. All of you. When I came to this time, I didn't know anyone, I was all alone in a world completely different from my own... But now I have friends... real friends, who I can share my secrets with.”
  • “In that case... Will you come with me, Okabe Rintaro? To 1975?... To tell the truth, I want someone to come with me. I don't want to go knowing I'll fail. I don't want my death to be meaningless... So come with me, save me. I want to save you too. I can't bear seeing you like this. So come, save me.” — To Okabe in her ending, when he was all worn out because of his countless time leaps.

Trivia[]

  • Suzuha's voice actresses, Yukari Tamura and Cherami Leigh, also voices her mother.
  • If the cosplay addon is activated in the Steins;Gate visual novel, Suzuha's new appearance resembles Motoko Kusanagi, a character in the Ghost in the Shell series.
  • As Lab Member 008, she is the last Lab Member introduced in Steins;Gate.
  • According to Steins;Gate 0, she left for 2010 on August 13, 2036, thus by Steins;Gate 0's main plot, she would be 19. August 13 is also the same date that Mayuri would die in the Alpha Attractor Field in 2010.
  • The scenario writer of Steins;Gate, Naotaka Hayashi, apologized to the fans about the ambiguous ending of Suzuha's route in the Steins;Gate visual novel, and said that due to the efforts of Suzuha and Rintaro Okabe, their and the future of the world line is certainly happy. However, since he was not the writer for said ending, this claim is questionable.
  • Suzuha had never had a cellphone or ridden a bike before going to 2010. Though she had ridden a motorcycle before.
  • Due to the dystopian setting in the future in both the Alpha and Beta Attractor Field, she learnt survival skills.
  • In the OVA Egoistic Poriomania, Okabe encounters a girl with a face very similar to Suzuha's. The girl mentions that a psychic told her that she would have a child in seven years, implying that she might be Yuki Amane.
  • Given that she goes by Suzu Hashida after going to 1975, it is implied that at some point, she figured out that Itaru Hashida was her father.
  • In Steins;Gate 0, it is shown that Suzuha has a large appetite, being the first three-time champion at GO GO Curry's eating contest.
