Prologue[]

The story starts with flashes of Okabe's experiences; Kurisu and Doctor Nakabachi, her father choking her, charging to attack Doctor Nakabachi when suddenly Kurisu rushes in between, and lastly Kurisu covered in blood fallen against him. Date: 2010/08/21

Suzuha pulls the bloodied and in shock Okabe from the time machine. Mayuri and Daru rush over in concern, and Suzuha sends her father for a towel, water, and some clothes. Okabe, wishing desperately for nothing but to be left alone, falls to his knees under his extreme fatigue, the hopelessness, and the crushing weight of having killed Kurisu.

SG0afterfailure

Return from failing to save Kurisu, August 21, 2010

When Mayuri asks what happened, he admits that he killed Kurisu and everything is his fault. Suzuha tries to reason with him to try again, but fails as Okabe knows how impossible it is to escape world line convergence no matter what you try. Suzuha comes to the point where she is going to slap Okabe in an attempt to bring him back to his senses, but Mayuri stops her. Mayuri does not believe that it is alright to force someone who is so shattered. Suzuha argues that at this rate the future will not change, but Mayuri asks her why Okabe alone has to shoulder the burden of the future.

SG0MayuaskSuzu

Suzuha explains that Okabe has the ability to observe the world, but Mayuri does not change her opinion. That ability was something that Okabe had not wished for, and she thinks that Okabe might only get hurt once more if they try again. For one person to change the world's future must be impossible.

Suzuha starts to mention the Steins Gate, but stops and explains instead that she understands Mayuri's feelings, but she traveled to this time with the future on the line and can no longer return to 2036. Giving up so easily is not an option for her. She addresses Okabe telling him that the time machine has a limited amount of fuel, but there is some surplus. However, it is only enough to travel 344 days. Before a full year has passed it will become impossible to reach July 28 even when making a one way trip. Before it comes to that, she will jump to the past again even if it is only her who goes.

However, by this time Okabe is so far gone in his exhaustion and shock that though he can tell that someone is speaking to him, he cannot make out the words. As he begs internally to be released, Mayuri embraces him. She calls out to him that it is alright to not keep trying, that he can cry, and that she is by his side. Okabe begins to brokenly sob.
He doesn't know what brought Mayuri to say such things, but as his tears overflow, he decides to forget everything and that is why from that day forward he never visits the Future Gadget Laboratory.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

After Okabe has given up on everything, he discards his Chuunibyou name “Hououin Kyouma” and decides to live as a normal college student. Three months later, he is helping out an associate professor of his university, named Izaki, because Izaki has connections to Kurisu’s university, Viktor Chondria, where Okabe would like to go to learn more about her research and continue it if possible.

Izaki is participating in the winter Akihabara Techno Forum (ATF), and Okabe is helping him out by working at the convention’s reception desk when Okabe meets Maho Hiyajo, a 21 year-old woman who looks like a young pre-teen.

He, like many others before him, treats her at first like a child, much to her irritation, until she wearily shows him her I.D. card from Viktor Chondria University’s Brain Science Institute. Realizing his mistake, he apologizes, and as the two talk she invites him to come listen to the seminar on artificial intelligence by Professor Alexis Leskinen, whom she is assisting. With Okabe guiding her, she proceeds to the staff room.

As Maho walks away after they part, Okabe sees Moeka Kiryu, who has an appointment to interview Maho’s professor, approach Maho. Seeing Moeka once more causes Okabe to suffer the beginnings of a panic attack due to his PTSD from his experiences in the Alpha world lines. He attempts to calm himself and swallows some tranquilizing medicine.

SG012 23RINE

RINE conversation discussing the seminar with Mayuri on Okabe's phone around the time that Okabe is looking at Izaki's pamphlet.

While waiting for the medicine to fully kick in, Okabe’s eye is caught by the pamphlet for Izaki’s lecture, which is lying on the reception table. Izaki will be speaking about the history of pseudoscience and the “Nakabachi thesis”, which is how the thesis that Nakabachi stole from Kurisu has come to be known as. Okabe reflects on what has happened since Nakabachi defected to Russia. Since then, the time machine theory Nakabachi presented remains hard to accept for the public academic, scientific society. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) controls information to prevent leaks, and Nakabachi is happily living without being aware that he is really being kept under house-arrest in a lab. However, following what John Titor from 2036 said, Okabe knows that an information war must be already underway beneath the surface.

Awhile later, Okabe heads to the lecture hall where Maho and Leskinen will be presenting. On his way there, he sees Maho and Leskinen come out of the venue’s staff room and overhears a scrap of their conversation in English. He is able to barely make out “Makise”, “Fire at Kurisu’s house.” “Mrs. Makise is all right.” “Robbery.” “The police called off the investigation.” “Why was the FBI there?” “It doesn’t make sense.”

SG0lesmahopres

Leskinen and Maho giving their presentation.

Upon entering the filled lecture hall, Okabe notices that Moeka is in attendance and searches for a seat away from her. As Leskinen’s presentation, entitled “The Artificial Intelligence Revolution”, begins, Maho stands next to the professor and provides simultaneous interpretation. Their current research incorporates Kurisu’s research that was published the year before in Science magazine on the neural pulse signals of memories stored in the temporal lobe and the theory of turning analog memories into digital patterns. Based on her theory, Leskinen’s team is developing a system that converts human memory into digital data and stores it in a computer.

At this announcement the audience begins to stir and gets louder as Leskinen continues. Okabe is lost in thought, realizing that Kurisu’s research had been continued after her death and that the storing and manipulation of memories as digital data being presented here is basically the same as the theory of time leaping that Kurisu had made possible in the Alpha world lines.

Leskinen explains that they are applying this research to two projects. One is in the medical field and is being researched collaboratively with the Viktor Chondria psychophysiology lab. This project focuses on how to write memory data that has been previously saved on a computer back to the brain of the owner of the memories with the goal of being able to use it as symptomatic therapy for memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s. Eventually, automatic back-ups of memory data could be made via a continuous connection between a computer and a patient’s hippocampal gyrus. Then when the patient loses their memories, the data could be re-installed into the brain. Eventually, by making externally stored memory data constantly accessible via the hippocampal gyrus even patients with brain damage or atrophy might be able to continue to maintain brain functions. It would essentially be like an external memory back-up of a person’s brain.

While listening, the audience is filled with mixed feelings of astonishment, skepticism and repulsion for this research. Leskinen who apparently can understand Japanese, though not speak it, quickly begins to answer some of the audience’s questions. As he goes deeper into some of the limitations the research is currently facing, the members of the audience become disappointed with what they see as a lack of feasibility of the project and begin to aim more provocative, dismissive questions at Leskinen. Okabe’s irritation rises, since this research is also what Kurisu was involved in and is something that Okabe has experienced personally.

Okabe notes Maho’s dissatisfied expression and increasingly harsher interpretation in contrast to Leskinen’s calm on-stage. When one of the questioners calls writing memory data to the brain impossible and begins to explicitly criticize Kurisu, Okabe’s self-control snaps. He stands up shouting “Objection!”, stunning the lecture hall. He continues to scold that there has been lots of technology before this that people deemed impossible. However, there were scientists who overcame such thinking leading us to our current advancements today. Okabe finishes by declaring that there is no purpose in just offhandedly criticizing them.

Leskinen breaks the dumbfounded silence that descends on the hall following Okabe’s outburst, by applauding Okabe happily and complements him, though he follows up by warning Okabe that a scientist must always keep his composure. With an apology, Okabe embarrassedly sits back down and reflects on having changed less than he thought in the past several months.

Before moving on to the next topic for presentation, Leskinen calls on the audience to applaud Okabe as well, saying that brave men such as him will make stunning discoveries and that Okabe may become the third Einstein after his assistant Maho. After loosening up the audience with some quick banter between Leskinen and Maho, Maho announces that she will shortly be taking a break as a much better interpreter will take her place, and they begin the presentation of their second project, the Amadeus System.

SG0Mahopresentation

Maho:"The Amadeus system"

On a large screen a seemingly perfect copy of Maho appears and greets the audience in an almost completely human voice. She introduces herself as the Maho derived from a memory recording made 78 hours and 22 minutes previously. She begins to address their doubts as to the feasibility of downloading and using memories by posing the question what they think she is if its not possible. Finally, Leskinen asks several questions of Amadeus Maho about her past and private information, but AmaMaho refuses to answer them, since they are inappropriate. Seeing as how the A.I. seems able to refuse to answer questions despite having the necessary data to do so -as if she is capable of shame-, Okabe is stunned at the difference in level between this A.I. and ones that have been developed up til now. The audience is astir once again as Okabe wonders if it is real, as it so convincingly seems, or if she is just programmed to act in that way.

However, Maho assures the audience that Amadeus’s ability to decided for itself what questions to answer is not something that the researchers have programed it to do. Amadeus uses “the memories given to it to make its own autonomous decisions”. Amadeus Maho takes over speaking once again to explain another peculiar aspect to the audience. AmaMaho has certain memories that she “forgets”. Things like “what color pajamas she wore last week”, she certainly has in her memory storage, but the data is inaccessible to her, since, just like for humans, it is unnecessary information for survival. This further points to the memory system of “Amadeus” seeming to be close to that of a human.

Leskinen tells the audience that they have been further surprised by Amadeus’s capability to use its memories to decide to and intentionally tell lies. Furthermore, when doing so, this is not the result of any programming error, and AmaMaho even speaks of having a sense of conscience that plays into the matter.

Leskinen ends with a striking statement, “It may be possible to give Amadeus a soul, just like a living human’s”, and that this “would mean the creation of artificial intelligence, in the true sense” of the words.

Following utter silence in the hall at the presentation’s end, the hall dissolves into chaos as the audience discusses amongst themselves.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

Okabe is able to join the convention’s formal after-party thanks to Associate Professor Izaki, but in the unfamiliar setting Okabe feels out of place and grows bored. When he accidentally voices such thoughts aloud, he finds himself met with sympathizing agreement by Hiyajo Maho. As they get to talking about the contents of the earlier presentation, Maho reacts with great surprise when Okabe recites the theory as he had previously learned it from Kurisu.

Having agreed to become a conversation test partner for “Kurisu”(Amadeus Kurisu), Okabe travels to Wakou, Saitama on the Sunday a week after the ATF to meet Maho at the hotel she is staying at. From there they travel to the Japan office of the Global Brain Science Comprehensive Research Organization, an endeavor led by Leskinen’s lab to form an organization of brain scientists from around the world working together. However, the office is currently only being used by Leskinen and Maho, and Maho brings Okabe there in order to introduce him to Amadeus.

They talk on their way to a small, heavily secured room with a single computer and while Maho lets the Amadeus system start up. Maho takes the time to give Okabe several warnings to brace him for the differences and possible problems experienced while interacting with Amadeus instead of the original person. Amadeus can seem so natural that people will find themselves treating the Amadeus just like the real person. However, especially the difference in or lack of shared memories can be very difficult for humans to keep up with. Maho gives Okabe the chance to quit if he thinks it will be too much of an emotional strain on him, but Okabe decides to go through with meeting “Kurisu”.

Chapter Title Explanation[]

SG0zerochptitle

“Absolute Zero” chapter title design

零化域のミッシングリンク –Absolute Zero– (Reikaiki no Misshingu Rinku, Missing Link of the Annihilator) is meant to indicate several things. 零化域(‘’Reikaiki’’), also known as 零化イデアル(‘’Reika Ideal’’), is the Japanese equivalent of the mathematical term “Annihilator (of a set)” in English. It is a Euclidean space concept from ring theory, generalizing torsion and orthogonality[1].

The ミッシングリンク(Missing Link) part of the title refers to the gap, or "missing link", in the story of the original work leading to Okabe’s arrival at the Steins Gate.

The English title “Absolute Zero” is meant to impart a sense of the confrontation scene between Okabe who is lost in despair and Suzuha who is cool-headly revealing matters after their return to August 21, 2010. ”Zero” is furthermore used as an indication of this chapter's place as the beginning chapter of this story.

Together, the dual Japanese and English titles are meant to impart the standstill that Okabe is in having given up, twisting torsion, and the feeling of being frozen in this world line.[2]

Wracked by a sense of guilt, Okabe is receiving hypnotherapy at a clinic in an attempt to overcome the trauma he is under. However, he clearly recalls the moment of Kurisu's murder during the hypnotic treatment and cries out in agony. In the end, it is decided to halt the therapy for now and monitor the further progress of symptomatic treatment via medicine.

Mayuri has been waiting for Okabe’s treatment session to end in order to go home together, but she invites him to stop by Akihabara for a bit first, saying that Faris and Luka would love to see him. Since he no longer visits the lab frequently, Okabe has not met them in a long time and agrees to go.

While the four talk when they meet up at the Akihabara Station, Mayuri lets them in on a new “Operation” that she and Daru have come up with in order to cheer up Suzuha. They have decided to hold a Christmas party, since Suzuha has never experienced one before. Okabe is unsure about whether to participate when Mayuri invites him, because things have been strained between him and Suzuha since he refused to time travel again, leaving her mission unfulfilled. However, he agrees to think it over after Mayuri assures him that she believes that Suzuha does not hate him.

As the group’s conversation continues, he begins to remember the things that happened the day before. Since the Amadeus A.I. is made from Kurisu’s memories before she came to Japan, Okabe was a stranger to “Kurisu”. However, conversing with “her” was very nostalgic, and in the end, he officially accepted the responsibility of being a test partner for Amadeus.

“Kurisu” addresses him discontentedly, since this is the eighth time since yesterday that she has tried to contact him, but he has ignored her until this evening. POV: Maho Hiyajo

Maho remembers her last conversation with Kurisu (March 28, 2010 23:18:01hrs) before Kurisu had gone to study abroad in Japan. In their shared lab room at Viktor Chondria, Kurisu had been frustratedly talking aloud to herself. When Maho was no longer able to concentrate, she brought it to Kurisu’s attention and asked her to stop. This exchange inspired Kurisu to think of giving Amadeus the capability to talk to itself, and she discussed with Maho whether talking to oneself might be a proof of having an ego.

SG0KurisuMaho

Note: Preproduction photo, the final product differs[3]

When the conversation turned to Kurisu’s study abroad in Japan and her scheduled lecture at the July ATF in Akihabara, Kurisu happily told Maho that her father had sent her an invitation to his research presentation. After some more chatting, the two agreed to look further into giving Amadeus the ability to talk to itself once Kurisu returned.

There had been a reason for Kurisu to be sent to Japan. The two young women who had shared a special position as researchers at the forefront of neuroscience, were often exposed to jealousy from their surroundings. Because Professor Leskinen had judged the situation as serious, he had sent Kurisu away to study abroad for awhile. Maho had sent Kurisu off while keeping her own small feelings of jealousy towards Kurisu’s genius hidden… And like that, Kurisu died.

Though Maho has a sense of pride as and the heart of a researcher, her feelings have continued to be unstable since the death of her junior. As she sits lost in these thoughts of her last memories of Kurisu, they lead her to thinking about Okabe who had known a Kurisu that Maho hadn’t...

Amadeus Kurisu’s voice suddenly brings Maho back to her senses. Maho tells “Kurisu” that she wonders if it is alright that the professor is trusting Okabe so much when they’ve only just met him. “Kurisu” has gotten it into her digital head that Maho might like Okabe, but Maho continues to be adamant that that is not the case.

As Maho falls into thought again, wondering what kind of relationship Okabe and Kurisu had had, “Kurisu” asks Maho if her “original” and Okabe had known each other, which Maho confirms. Maho leaves it up to “Kurisu” to decide if she wants to talk with Okabe about it or wait and see if he brings it up himself. “Kurisu” considers that “pretending not to know something” is similar to lying, and decides to go that route, expressing that it will deliver interesting data for the research on Amadeus.

They regret teasing her, but she tries to assure them that it is all right since she and Okarin are just childhood friends.

When Mayuri kindly asks Yuki what she thinks of Daru. It seems clear that Yuki is interested in Daru, but she believes that Daru is avoiding her and is under the false impression that he is more into a “younger sister” type of girl, someone like Suzuha. Because of this Yuki thinks it would be better for her to not attend the Christmas party. Mayuri is left at a loss as to how to clear up the misunderstanding, since she cannot reveal that Suzuha is Yuki’s daughter from the future.

Seeing Mayuri feeling down, Fubuki tries to cheer her up, and in the midst of playing around, they reach the station. Suddenly, Fubuki’s mind is struck momentarily by a flashback of Mayuri falling before a train.

Suzuha: "You're being so irresponsible. You spend a whole day doing nothing but lazing around, eating, browsing the net and playing games!"
Note: Preproduction photo, the final product greatly differs, e.g. the lab is not yet decorated for Christmas.

Suzuha is unable to hold back her irritation as she sees Daru amusing himself by surfing the net in the lab. Knowing his future condition if he continues on a path of unhealthy habits, she is worried, but he seems to be making no real effort to change despite her warnings. She begins scolding him yet again, this time even tricking him into thinking she is holding him at gun point in order to get him to finally pay attention to her and stop making excuses about the strain of his secret work as a hacker and researching how to make a time machine.

Suzuha is feeling pressured. She needs to persuade Okabe, since he is the one person who can become the key to preventing the Third World War. However, nothing she says seems able to convince him to try again to save Kurisu Makise and reach the Steins Gate. At this rate, the world will plunge into the most terrible future possible filled with the war that sacrificed many people and took so many comrades and dear ones from her.

However, this is not her only burden. She has been constantly searching Akihabara this winter looking for Kagari Shiina, who got separated from Suzuha while they made a stop further in the past before Suzuha came to the present time. She also needs to see the fulfillment of Daru and Yuki’s love come about in order for her to be born. None of these things is going well.

When Daru and Suzuha hear Yuki humming as she comes up the stairs to the lab, Suzuha ducks behind the curtain of the development room to hide. After entering the lab, Yuki tells Daru about her and Mayuri’s promise to meet in the lab today in order to cook and asks after Daru’s “sister”, Suzuha. Since Suzuha is living in the lab, the story of her being Daru’s younger sister, “Hashida Suzuha” was made up. In order to make sure the truth stays hidden, however, Suzuha tries to avoid meeting Yuki, which is why she is hiding right now. As she listens to her future parents chatting, Suzuha is reminded of her last moments with her father in 2036.

2036/8/13 19:46:01hrs
Amidst the nearing sounds of heavy gunfire as the security forces closed in on them, Suzuha, Daru, Mayuri and Mayuri's adoptive daughter Kagari made their way to a secret room built on top of the remains of the war damaged Radio Kaikan Building. Inside stood the time machine that Daru had completed. Suzuha started it up and set the destination for August 13, 1975 with the ease of her experience as the machine's test pilot, having trained and made small test jumps many times before with the machine. Before she could depart, however, the security forces were upon them. Daru stopped Suzuha from going to fight them off, telling her that she must jump to the past now.
Daru and Mayuri then decided to send Kagari with Suzuha as well, since the machine could carry two passengers. Kagari struggled against leaving her mother, but Mayuri firmly ordered her to go and gave Kagari a green Upa keychain, which Mayuri had been cherishing for a long time, as a keepsake. After the two parents had entrusted Suzuha with messages to not give up for Okabe, the time machine hatch was sealed, and Suzuha would never see them again.

Suzuha is afraid that she might let something important slip under Yuki’s warm regard, but Daru and Okabe try to encourage her that it is all right to engage with her mother more, since Yuki is not the type to pry. As she begins to tear up, Suzuha tells Okabe that they still have a bit of time before the time limit to travel back to the past is reached, so he does not have to decide right now, but she begs him to consider trying once more.

Okabe wants to respond to her, but the violent remembrance of Kurisu’s death causes him to become sick in a panic attack. Both Suzuha and Daru are worried for Okabe, and Suzuha apologizes for talking about these things too soon. Okabe tells her that it is alright. He understands what she is trying to tell him and her feelings, but he explains to her what he has seen and experienced in the hopeless, powerless fight to change to a better world line via time travel. He believes that if they try to mess with what humans should not control then things will only become worse. That is his answer for now.

Next, a news report is aired on the Japanese government’s steps to prepare for possible cases in Japan of a new, widespread form of encephalitis currently affecting the United States. The disease’s description shocks Okabe, since the symptoms they explain are familiar to him. People are experiencing things like finding themselves in places they have no memory of traveling to, knowing people whom they have never met before and inconsistencies between their memories of events and those of the people around them in a way that is like déjà vu only clearer. All of those symptoms are what Okabe experiences as part of his ability to observe changes in the world line, Reading Steiner.

POV: Suzuha Amane

1975/SUMMER - Inside the time machine atop the roof of the Radio Building
After being away for almost an hour, Suzuha returns to find Kagari still crying.
SG0KagariSuzuTM

Suzuha tries to rally Kagari.

With the weight of her heavy mission on her shoulders, Suzuha takes a stern approach towards helping the timid Kagari rise above her grief at parting forever with her mother. She tells Kagari that from now on she is a member of Valkyrie, too, and will work for Suzuha. Then, she impresses on Kagari that since this is 1975 there is no one they can ask for protection and Kagari must protect herself. The longer they are here the greater the chance that someone might discover their time machine, so Suzuha tells Kagari that they need to hurry with their mission and leads her out of the machine. The sight from the roof stuns Kagari. For though the sky above Akihabara in 1975 is polluted by factories, it is still blue in color and the sun is strong. Kagari has grown up only knowing the grey, cloud-covered sky caused by the nuclear war in the future and air so dirty that a filtered mask is necessary. Breaking things down to give Kagari a more tangible motivation, Suzuha encourages Kagari to fight for the sake of protecting the sky she sees now.
Seeing Kagari collecting herself and trying to understand things,

Suzuha closes and locks the time machine, which will only open again in response to Suzuha’s biometrics. The two agree to split up to search for the IBN5100 and meet up each hour and a half in front of the Radio Building to share information.

Suzuha recalls these things as she stands atop the Radio Building at night in 2010. From Suzuha’s perspective it has only been several months since that exchange 35 years ago. Since they were separated, Suzuha has been searching for Kagari in hopes of finding her in Tokyo. She has also been coming daily to the roof to check on the time machine and make sure that her father had not been coming here to examine the machine, since she was afraid that his gaining too much knowledge in advance might cause a time paradox.

Faris joins her on the roof. Faris has been helping Suzuha hide the time machine by renting out the Radio Building’s roof and sealing it off to outsiders, saying that they were working on developing a knew VR-game. Faris feels a protective/motherly affection and concern when watching Suzuha struggle and keep up a stoic, on-guard stance here in 2010. To cheer her a bit Faris has brought a box of leftover cake from May Queen, since she can tell that Suzuha truthfully loves cake.

While Faris is inviting Suzuha to eat dinner together at Faris’s home, Suzuha suddenly becomes aware that someone is spying on them from the rooftop door. She gives chase as the mysterious figures flees. However, they prove to also be a well-trained combatant. Laying a hasty but cunning trap for Suzuha on a long flight of stairs, the spy successfully makes it to their get-away motorcycle, and all Suzuha manages to see is their helmeted, black-suited figure before they disappear into Center Street. Aghast at the possibility that the spy might have overheard the brief mention that Faris and Suzuha had made of the time machine during their conversation. Suzuha looks to the sky she had once gazed at with Kagari, and sighed -Something that was fast becoming a habit for her these days.-.

Suzuha asks Faris not to tell the other labmems about this happening, out of fear that Okabe might decide that the danger was too great and destroy the time machine. Suzuha must protect the machine and deliver Okabe to the Steins Gate, as she promised to those in 2036. Faris agrees to keep quiet on the condition that Suzuha tells Daru.

POV: Maho Hiyajo

As Maho and Leskinen are preparing to head to Tokyo to meet Okabe and hear his report on Amadeus, Maho is fidgeting and feeling tense. Leskinen’s continued teasing about Okabe being a love interest for Maho does nothing to help. Maho herself is trying to deny internally that she is nervous because of meeting Okabe but even more because of seeing how “Kurisu” might have changed in the last couple of weeks. Maho has been trying to talk seldomly with Kurisu while Okabe is being a tester. If in the course of the tester experiment “Kurisu” changes into someone Maho does not know, then it would make Maho feel sad.

When Maho finally asks Leskinen why he chose Okabe as a tester, a question that has been burning in her mind. Leskinen asks Maho if she is jealous, which is true. She reluctantly admits that it bother her. And, Leskinen assures Maho that he chose Okabe because Leskinen wants an outside catalyst, someone uninvolved with the research, to help Amadeus truly evolve. Since Okabe is smart and a friend of Kurisu, Leskinen believes him to be a good choice. The professor further feels like Kurisu and Maho’s personalties are the best defense to safe-guard Amadeus. Even if Okabe should prove untrustworthy and try to sell the Amadeus technology, their AI counterparts would never be persuaded to cooperate with such a move.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

While waiting in Akihabara for the time he is set to meet Professor Leskinen and Maho, Okabe stops by the quiet Yanabayashi Shrine in order to speak with “Kurisu” in a place where people won’t stare at him. He calls “Kurisu” and asks her if all their conversations from the past two weeks have been recorded in her logs, which she will be handing over to the professor and Maho after the meeting.

SG0Amakuriconvo12 15

“Kurisu”: “I-It’s just an example. Don’t try to read anything into it.”

She affirms this to his dismay, since he only just fully realized that anything personal he tells her would also be relayed to Leskinen and Maho then. He quickly asks her if there was anything very personal that he told her. After teasing him about a few embarrassing tidbits he had shared, she asks him again why he had called her “Christina” when they first met. She theorizes that he might have possibly known her “original”.

Thinking to himself that it was because a genius like Makise Kurisu was the kind of person whom he always had wanted to be, he finally tells “Kurisu” that the nickname was to mask his embarrassment. He admits that he feels this way not just with the original but with “her” as well, since he has never spoken with a girl inside a monitor before. “Kurisu” becomes embarrassed at being treated as a girl. Seeing her flustered reaction, Okabe catches himself just as he is about to tell her that he really likes that side of her. The realization that he was just about to treat a computer program like it was the real person hits him hard.

“Kurisu” is curious about her original’s relationship with him and how her original reacted when he called her nicknames. Did she get mad at him or eventually forgive him and laugh it off? Thinking of Kurisu, Okabe is overwhelmed by a flashback of her death once again and hears her voice blaming him for killing her. Regaining consciousness, he hangs up the call abruptly, and his legs give out from under him. The weight sinks into him that he is just using “Kurisu” to avoid reality and what he had commited. Clinging to “her” as a replacement in disrespect of Kurisu. Determining not to talk with “Kurisu” anymore, he turns off his phone when Amadeus tries to call him again.

On the UPX building overpass Okabe drinks some water and tries to pull himself together, when Mayuri’s cosplay friends, Fubuki and Kaede, greet him. The two are concerned since he is visibly ill, but he tries to pass it off, in order to not worry Mayuri through them. As they talk he call tell that Fubuki and Kaede really care for Mayuri, which he is glad for. However, Fubuki, who is still concerned by Mayuri’s earlier revelation that Okabe has someone else whom he likes, suddenly blurts out a question, asking Okabe who the girl he likes is. At the thought of Kurisu, a flashback once again springs up. Fubuki apologizes for her rudeness. But then—

Chapter Title Explanation[]

SG0epigraphchptitle

“Closed Epigraph” chapter title design

閉時曲線のエピグラフ –Closed Epigraph– (Heijikyokusen no Epigurafu, Epigraph of the Closed Curve)

“Epigraph of the Closed Curve” is a title that originally refers to the first novel of the (now) non-canon Epigraph Trilogy, which served as inspiration for several important plot lines in Steins;Gate 0. In its terms glossary, the novel explains 閉時曲線(‘’Heijikyokusen’’, “closed time curve”) as referring to a closed timelike curve (CTC).[4] A CTC is a mathematical physics theory of a world line which is “closed”, meaning it returns to its starting point.[5][6]

The Steins;Gate 0 guidebook’s explanation of the title leaves out mention of the CTC theory but does explain the term as being derived from the Japanese terms 閉曲線(heikyokusen, closed curve) and 閉じられた時間軸(tojirareta jikanjiku, closed time axis). A “closed curve” being of significance to this story, since it means a curve formed by making the two ends of a line into one. Any round figure, perfect circle, ellipse, etc., is in fact a closed curve.[2], which represents the story’s plot developments and is visualized by its logo.

One meaning of the word “epigraph” is “a short quotation or saying at the beginning of a book [...], intended to suggest its theme.”[7]

Until this chapter the story flows following what was revealed in the original work’s prologue. That at this rate things will just repeat, starting from the prologue and returning to the prologue. In other words, if nothing changes, then the world will become an endless cycle of repetition. And, in this chapter, Okabe’s choice will cause a change in the world line from this point on; an “epigraph” to the following story.[2]

POV: Rintaro Okabe
*Note: Takes place immediately after Closed Epigraph (start to other main route of the game).

Okabe has arrived to meet with Dr. Leskinen and Maho in their hotel room to have the check-in meeting about [Kurisu]. To their surprise, he tells them that he no longer wishes to be a tester for Amadeus. Maho is angry initially, but is calmed down by an understanding Dr. Leskinen, who then points out just how often Okabe contacts [Kurisu] and how interesting the results from the logs are, and how different [Kurisu] behaves around him. Dr. Leskinen asks if Okabe is quitting because talking to Amadeus [Kurisu] is becoming painful, but he responds that it's the exact opposite: it's becoming too much fun and he's scared of where that will lead him. Dr. Leskinen accepts this and agrees to stop their arrangement, but doesn't want to cut off their connection, and asks Okabe to at least keep the Amadeus app on his phone in case he ever wants to talk to [Kurisu] again, although he will instruct her to no longer initiate contact with him. Okabe agrees, hoping to keep his connection to Viktor Chondria University. Dr. Leskinen then receives a phone call and goes to the next room, leaving Okabe alone with Maho.

Both Okabe and Maho apologize to each other, and talk until Maho asks him to try talking to [Kurisu] every once in a while, which Okabe says he'll think about. Okabe then remembers the conversation that Maho and Dr. Leskinen were having back at the ATF, and asks about Kurisu's mom. Maho, who was close to Kurisu's mom as well, explains that her house had been set on fire, although she wasn't hurt. She then reluctantly explains that the FBI later came to investigate, which was very unusual for a case like that, and that witnesses had seen multiple well trained men set the fire quickly and then leave, and that they spoke Russian. Okabe thinks to himself about the existence of the Rounders, who could pull something like this off, and Dr. Nakabachi, who was currently seeking asylum in Russia.

Maho also explains that following Kurisu's death, local police and a Japanese detective came to investigate the lab as part of a joint investigation, but later, local police said there was never a Japanese detective and they had never sent anyone to search the lab. Maho says that she can't help but think that Kurisu must have been involved in something bigger and her death was being covered up somehow. Okabe starts to think to himself about how he was the one who killed Kurisu, and what he learned from Suzuha about the events leading up to World War Three, as well as remembering how Mayuri was killed over and over. Maho starts to suspect that Okabe knows something, but before she can dig further, Dr. Leskinen returns from his call and suggests they go out to dinner, which they agree to.

After dinner, the three of them are in a parking garrage, and are approached by Associate Professor Izaki in his car, who had insisted on driving them all home after he'd called Okabe and learned they were all together. As they are getting in, Associate Professor Izaki whispers to Okabe that he's impressed at how he got close to Dr. Leskinen, but before they can leave, the car windows shatter as they are under attack from an assailant. They all take cover behind the car, and Okabe looks over and sees the assailant, who seems vaguely familiar to Okabe and is holding something like a makeshift handgun. He then hears the assailant mumbling something about cutting off that which causes you to stumble as it's better to end life maimed than be subject to eternal suffering, and then saying something about how a soul comes from God and can never be placed in something artificial. The assailant then fires his weapon again, but misses as Professor Izaki runs away. Okabe then gets everyone in the car and tries to drive forward, but can't since the clutch is in neutral. The assailant then shoots at Okabe, who feels pain on the left side of his face. As he flails around not knowing what to do since he doesn't have a license, Maho jumps into the passenger seat, shifts the clutch, and reaches over to grab the wheel, telling Okabe to hit the accelerator. They haphazardly drive forward, almost hitting the assailant, and carelessly race through the parking garage for a while, until they spin out. As they try to switch drivers, they notice another car heading straight for them with the assailant as the driver. They quickly get out of the way right before the assailant drives into their car at full speed, seemingly killing himself in the process. Security finally arrives and calls the police.

Okabe finally notices the wound on his head and has flashbacks to Mayuri and Kurisu dying at the sight of the blood. Dr. Leskinen takes a look and assures him that the wound didn't cause major damage. Maho then points out that the assailant was from their ATF seminar, the one that Okabe had yelled at. Okabe then repeats what he'd heard the assailant say to himself earlier, concluding that the assailant was likely against the concept of Amadeus having a soul on the basis of religion. Then everyone's attention is drawn away as they notice the assailant somehow survived the crash, and is getting out of the car and trying to aim at Dr. Leskinen through all his injuries until the assailant is shot in the head. While everyone else is stunned, Okabe wonders who had been able to kill the assailant like that, since none of the security or arriving police had their guns drawn. The three of them are then taken into custody for questioning, and then released much later. Okabe splits off from them in front of the station.

POV: Suzuha Amane

Suzuha is walking outside when she suddenly feels dizzy. For a moment, she thinks this could be her acquiring Reading Steiner until she realizes how high her body temperature is and that she's sick, for the first time since time traveling. She somehow makes it back to the lab and tries to quietly make her way to the couch without Daru noticing, but then she trips, and Daru, along with Yuki and Mayuri all come over to check on her. They all start to take care of her, with Daru going out to buy some medicine and Yuki and Mayuri helping Suzuha wipe down and change clothes, although Suzuha adamantly resists them helping her at first. Afterwards, Yuki starts to make Rice Porridge for her to take the medicine with.

Daru returns and goes over to check on Suzuha. Suzuha starts to say how she's getting too used to this calm life with everyone and should probably leave to focus on her mission, but Daru insists that there's nothing wrong with that. Daru then asks Suzuha what it is that she's been looking for every day, and she says she'll tell him when they're alone, since it concerns Mayuri.

Three days later, Suzuha is still sick, although feeling noticeably better. She hears Yuki humming the same song from the shower that she would sing to Suzuha in the future. She starts to get up, half-awake, but Mayuri stops her, and Suzuha remembers a conversation with Kagari from after they time traveled about Mayuri. Suzuha finally wakes up, Daru has gone out for the day, and she is offered something to eat by Mayuri, which she accepts. Mayuri is excited that she seems to have cooked a good stew after all the teaching she got from Yuki. Suzuha tries to get up in hopes of heading out, but Mayuri stops her, and gets Yuki to scold her too when she comes out of the shower, which Suzuha can't refuse.

Mayuri then has to leave for work, so Yuki offers to help wipe down Suzuha again, although Suzuha continues to insist on doing it herself, since she wants to hide her scars from her mother, especially the ones caused by the incident her mother died in. Afterwards, they both sit down to eat, and Yuki also offers to teach Suzuha how to cook, which Suzuha doesn't seem interested in. To break the silence, Suzuha asks about the song Yuki was humming in the shower, to which Yuki responds saying she doesn't even remember what it is, she just liked the melody. Suzuha mentions that her mom used to sing it to her, which leads to Yuki mentioning how she saw her the other day when she came to drop stuff of for Daru. Suzuha initially panics since her real mom is right in front of her, until she realizes the misunderstanding that she meant Daru's mom and her grandmother, since to Yuki, Daru and Suzuha are siblings. Suzuha's reaction and the fact that Daru's mom mentioned nothing abut Suzuha cause her to believe that Suzuha and her mom are fighting or something, and says that Suzuha can confide in her if she wants to. Suzuha is reminded again of how nice her mother is, and remembers how her mission is necessary in order to preserve this life in another world line.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

Okabe arrives at May Queen and is greeted by Faris. He asks about Mayuri, and Daru since he was the one who called him here, and Faris says that Mayuri hasn't arrived yet, but Daru is in his usual spot in the back. Okabe then tells Faris that he brought Maho along with him, and that she hasn't been to a maid café before, so he asks Faris to keep her company while he talks with Daru. Okabe had gone with Maho to the police earlier to talk about the attack again. Faris teases him about coming in with a cute girl, especially one who looks no older than a middle schooler, but Okabe adamantly denies it, explaining that she was here for research from an American university. Maho then finally comes in and is greeted by Faris. Faris starts to talk about her usual shenanigans, leaving Maho very confused, to whick Okabe just says to not think about it too much because it'll just make even less sense. He then says that he's going to go talk to Daru and Faris then takes Maho to another table.

When Okabe sits down next to Daru, he's initially annoyed at him coming in with Maho, just like Faris was, but Okabe then points out that he could just ask out Yuki instead of complaining. Getting back on track, Daru tells him that there's two things he wanted to talk about. The first was that he is looking for someone close to Mayuri, Kagari Shiina. Okabe is initially confused, since he can't remember Mayuri having any friends like that, until Daru explains that this was a request from Suzuha and that Kagari was Mayuri's adopted daughter in the future, who'd time travelled with Suzuha but gotten left behind on accident on a previous mission. So, Daru asks Okabe to see if he could find out if Kagari had ever found Mayuri in the past. Meanwhile, Maho, who still isn't used to the atmosphere of a maid café, is being teased relentlessly by Faris.

Daru then is about to explain the second topic he wanted to discuss, until he hesitates. Okabe convinces him to tell him, but in order to do so, Daru sends him a RINE, indicating that he doesn't want anyone potentially overhearing. Daru explains his 'secret job' as a general-purpose web developer/security developer/hacker going by the name DaSH, and how a client had come to him in order to gain access to the hard drive of a PC that was protected by security software that Daru himself wrote. He says that there's no way for him to get through the protection, since his team purposefully designed it so not even they could get through it, but says that Okabe might be able to help him, since the PC had belonged to Makise Kurisu. Since the client had seemed a little off, he'd gone to check who's it was through the manufacturer's records, and it had apparently been Kurisu's PC. He asks Okabe if there would be anything personal that Kurisu might have used as a password, since he's already tried all of the common ones, but that only if Okabe wanted to, since it was a more personal matter. Okabe starts to think of potentially significant things until he starts to remember her death again and asks for more time.

Okabe gets a call from Mayuri along with all the other girls (and Luka), who remind him about the Christmas party that night. Okabe explains that he's currently at a professor's lab, but he'll be there later. As he ends the call, he's in the Amadeus Lab and Maho comes over to him. He explains about the Christmas party they're having later and casually invites her, but she doesn't agree to go. They move on to why Okabe went there, which was to apologize to [Kurisu], since he'd hung up on her the last time they talked, likely making her mad, but he didn't want to do it alone so he came to ask Maho to be a mediator.

They call [Kurisu], who is initially surprised to hear from Okabe again, and evidently still upset about how their last conversation went. Okabe apologizes to her, to which she just laughs, because he just genuinely apologized to an AI. She says she'll forgive him as long as he agrees to take Maho out to dinner tonight since it's Christmas Eve, to everyone's surprise. Okabe then formally invites Maho to the Lab's Christmas party, which Maho tries to get out of, but is pressured even more by [Kurisu], even if it's not exactly what she had in mind. Maho then complains that she still has to give her report to Dr. Leskinen, right as he walks into the room and asks about their conversation. Okabe also invites him to the party and he seems really excited to go, leaving Maho no choice but to go along with it. [Kurisu], content with the situation, tells Okabe before they leave that he can still feel free to call her whenever he wants.

As Suzuha and Daru do maintenance on the time machine, Suzuha remembers the last conversation she had with Kagari: she had opposed Suzuha changing the timeline and fired off a gun in the time machine before running away. Suzuha snaps back to reality at Daru's call. Normally he wouldn't be allowed anywhere near it, but she was in no position to refuse since she was still somewhat recovering from being sick, although Suzuha is still doing most of the work herself. Daru offers to help her with some of the more mechanical tasks, but she still refuses.

When he says it's about time to go home, she tells him to go on ahead. He can tell that she wants to look for Kagari and tells her to take it easy for a while since she's still recovering. To deflect from the conversation, Suzuha gets Daru to help her turn a bolt. Then, Suzuha tells Daru about her worries about changing the timeline, since everything will be reset and everyone will disappear. Daru reassures her by saying that it doesn't matter if the present disappears, since neither of them want the war in the future to happen. In the end, Suzuha agrees, and also decides to not look for Kagari that day. She also told Daru about his future self's rather cowardly ways and to be careful, especially considering the recent attack with Okabe.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

Okabe arrives at the lab with Maho and Dr. Leskinen and introduces them to everyone. Mayuri and her cosplay friends, as well as Faris are there in Santa outfits, while Luka is in a black Santa costume and Nae is also with them dressed normally. While they all meet, Mayuri and Yuki discuss the missed opportunity of Nae, Maho and Dr. Leskinen in costume, but Okabe tries to shut down that train of thought. Mayuri finally receives the text that Daru and Suzuha are about to arrive, so they all get in position to surprise them and turn off the lights.

They maintain the surprise, but it's a little too effective, as when they set off the party poppers, Suzuha instinctively moves to attack the closest person, barely missing Yuki. She's quickly calmed down, and they explain that it was a surprise Christmas Party for her. Suzuha is impressed, although tries to leave because she doesn't know how to handle parties, but is stopped by Mayuri. Faris then starts a toast while Okabe reassures Suzuha. The toast speech goes around until Faris throws it onto Maho, who after being provoked by Faris is flustered and ends up making a cat noise in the panic, which everyone teases her for. Then, everyone eats Mayuri and Yuki's cooking, which turned out well after all their practice.

Next, they'd planned a gift exchange (Mayuri and Daru had provided Suzuha's gift, and Maho and Dr. Leskinen had stopped to get something small on the way there). They drew lots to see who got who's present, although behind the scenes, Mayuri, Faris, and Daru had rigged it a little. The three of them made sure that Yuki would receive Daru's gift, a music box, which Yuki ended up really liking, although unbeknownst to Daru, Faris and Mayuri had added a note to Daru's present as if it was from him, asking Yuki out to the movies, while also making sure Daru received their present, two movie tickets, effectively setting them up on a date.

Maho also received Mayuri's gift, which was another music box that apparently played the same song that Yuki hummed to Suzuha while she was sick (and would sing to her younger self in the future). Suzuha gets really excited about this and asks Mayuri what the name of the song is, but right before she answers, the whole world starts to twist in front of Okabe as he realizes that his Reading Steiner is activating again.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

Okabe recovers from Reading Steiner to find himself in a completely unknown situation. He's outside in the rain, and surrounded by people in Japanese Self-Defense Force gear and he's wearing their uniform too, although without any weapons. It seemed like they were protecting him as they walked though a dried up riverbed. Okabe asks where they are, and one of them responds that they're not too far from their destination, a car to transport Okabe away from here. Suddenly they hear helicopters overhead. The group splits up with some of them going out to distract them while the rest take Okabe away. Okabe hears gunshots behind them which causes him to take another look around and notice all the bodies that are lying on the ground, which almost causes him to scream.

He'd seen people die before many times, but he'd never stayed around long enough to see what happens to a body after death, and he wasn't prepared for it. The SDF soldier snaps him out of it, reminding him how many people died protecting him from the Soviet Union, which gets Okabe functioning enough to keep moving. Okabe doesn't know why people would be willing to die for him, or why the Soviet Union is involved in Japan so soon in this timeline, but decides to hold off on his questions for now. He continues going along through the city, passing countless bodies along the way, and eventually they reach their destination. The SDF soldier leaves him with the car's crew and wishes him luck. As Okabe rides in the car, he realizes that he has to change the world line again, and the best way to do that for now is to go along with what the SDF says.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

One month later, Okabe finally arrives in Okinawa. The trip took a lot longer than planned because they had to abandon the plane and go by ground the whole way. They make one final stop before heading to the Okinawa Defense Ministry, where unexpectedly, Yuki and Fubuki get into the car with him. On their way, the two of them explain that they were just with Mayuri and the others, and that they're safe. Their driver, Shimoyama, explains that everyone else is in the car behind them. Okabe immediately becomes suspicious of Shimoyama since there was plenty more space in the car for more people, meaning that he wanted to isolate the three of them for some reason.

His suspicion is immediately confirmed when Shimoyama asks Yuki if she knows about the whereabouts of Daru or his sister (Suzuha), since they were in a relationship. She answers no, but it seems like she might know something. Shimoyama pushes the matter a bit more, but then shifts his focus onto Okabe, asking if he has any information he wants to share about Daru, since they've worked together in the past. Okabe tries to throw him off by telling him about the pointless future gadgets from the lab they've made before, so Shimoyama pushes for other information, although Okabe doesn't know how to respond.

Finally, he turns his attention to Fubuki, asking about her PTSD, which he then calls out as being a disease that gives people memories of another world, with the notable difference being that Puchin (definitely-not-Putin) had the title of president in that world. Fubuki admits to having this, but doesn't really know what good it would do, while Okabe tries to hide his memories of another timeline. Then, Shimoyama talks about the differences noted between Leltsin (definitely-not-Lenin) and Golbachev (definitely-not-Gorbachev) across both of their timelines, which Okabe affirms. Shimoyama then points out that Okabe must have the disease too, since Leltsin and Golbachev don't exist in this world, and asks Okabe to share what he knows. Okabe refuses, so Shimoyama wants to push further, but he receives a phone call, then angrily shouts after hanging up, saying their changing destinations, because the Americans, who have significant influence in their government right now due to the state of the war, want them to hand over Okabe. When they arrive at the American base, Shimoyama begs Okabe one last time to give them any information he can, since they will get nothing from the Americans at this rate, but Okabe doesn't even know what information would be helpful to them at this point.

When they get out of the car, they meet up with Mayuri, Faris, Luka, and Kaede. Okabe is especially happy to see Mayuri after a month, and Faris tries to hug him too, in order to subtly tell him to not trust the SDF or the Americans. Then, a US agent named Hammond gets out of a car and tells everyone but Okabe to get onto a bus. They reluctantly agree and the bus drives away. Hammond then tries to usher Okabe into the back of the car when Shimoyama shouts to him to run away because he won't be coming back alive from America, only to be cut off by the sound of gunfire. Hammond gets Okabe into the car and they drive away. their car turns down a different road than the bus did and then Hammond turns to Okabe and tells him there's someone he wants him to meet, offering him a phone. When Okabe answers the phone, he sees that it's Amadeus [Kurisu], but before she can answer or he can ask why she's there, Reading Steiner activates again and the worldline changes.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

Okabe regains consciousness to find himself staring at Mayuri, back in the lab in Akihabara, only a month has passed since he had last been here. Okabe went to check the internet to make sure the cold war had still ended correctly, and it had. Okabe again wondered what had caused the worldline to change, since he hadn't done anything himself, and more importantly, who had changed it back. Evidently it was also the exact same worldline since everyone remembers him and Fubuki passing out back at the Christmas party, which was likely when the worldline had shifted the first time. The fact that Fubuki had also collapsed pretty much confirmed what Shimoyama was talking about in the other worldline about her having memories of another world. Apparently, Fubuki hadn't been allowed to leave the hospital for the past month for the sake of running tests because of the disease (dubbed New Encephalitis by the media), and the symptoms described in the magazine line up exactly with what Shimoyama had described. So, Okabe decides to go talk to Fubuki about Reading Steiner in the hospital, but goes along with Mayuri and the other girls to seem less awkward.

When they get to Fubuki's room, they hear her crying through the curtain, and enter worried, only to see that she's crying over a TV drama and welcomes them enthusiastically. Fubuki and the other New Encephalitis patients in the room seem to be wearing monitoring equipment on their heads to monitor their brain waves. Fubuki talks about how bored she's been because of how restrictive the hospital is about entertainment and not letting her leave. Then she asks how Okabe is doing, since he also collapsed back at the party, and he says he's doing fine. Kaede somehow misunderstands this to mean that there's something going on between them, which they both deny. Then, Fubuki describes the realistic dream she just had about her, Yuki and Okabe, which Okabe realizes is the same as the situation he just went through and asks to be alone with Fubuki for a while. Mayuri understands and gets everyone to leave.

He describes the dream happening in Okinawa, with them being interrogated in a car by the SDF by a man named Shimoyama. Once Fubuki believes him, he goes on to explain his Reading Steiner and that she doesn't have a disease and that all of that wasn't a dream. Fubuki realizes that it's likely that all the other patients there likely aren't sick either, because from talking with them, all their dreams share a lot of similarities. Fubuki asks if she should tell the nurses, but Okabe tells her not to, since it might just sound delusional, which is not what she needs right now, and she agrees. Right then, the nurse comes in to tell them that visiting hours are over, so everyone comes back in to say goodbye. As they're leaving the hospital, Okabe receives a message asking to meet from Suzuha.

Later, Okabe meets Suzuha on top of the Radio Building. Suzuha isn't really sure how to approach the topic at first but eventually she admits that she followed Okabe to the hospital that day. Okabe realizes that she'd found out he'd jumped world lines, and she admits she'd suspected it on Christmas Eve too. She then asks Okabe if this is the same worldline as before. Okabe tries to avoid answering at first, but Suzuha insists, and pulls out a gun on him, saying she's serious. She asks him again, although Okabe notices that she's bit her lip and blood is coming out. Okabe eventually answers that they've returned to the same worldline and it was likely caused by Russia. Suzuha starts to panic that they've started experiments, thinking that the path to Steins Gate might close, and orders Okabe to come with her in the time machine right now. As Okabe attempts to talk back to her, he hears a ringing in his ear as it becomes evident that Suzuha fired her gun, showing that she's really serious about forcing his hand if she has to.

Suddenly, Daru bursts through the door saying that he got a text from Mayuri and Yuki about Suzuha contacting Okabe, and then a message from an unknown sender with an attachment of a map of the building, so he came here, getting even more concerned when he heard the gunshot. He asks Suzuha why she has her gun drawn and she explains how the worldline has shifted as a result of Russian experiments, so she has to act now to prevent World War Three. Daru agrees that would be bad, but after all his research is starting to agree with Okabe that there might not be a way to save Kurisu the normal way. In response to Suzuha's further panic, Daru asks her to leave it to him, and takes the gun from her, and instead gives her the gloves that she got from Yuki at the Christmas party. Suzuha starts to cry, asking her father for help, while Okabe stares at the time machine again, reaffirming his desire to never go back into it.

Suzuha and Daru are in the time machine, wrapped in blankets, as Suzuha has finally calmed down. Daru tries to reassure her that Okabe will eventually come around and work with her voluntarily, and Suzuha is willing to accept that, but then tells Daru that the fuel isn't the only time constraint they have. The quantum computer has to constantly run calculations both to keep track of their current coordinates and calculate their destination for each jump, and because of her extra unplanned jumps to stop and search for Kagari, the internal battery probably wont last for longer than six months passively, and a total of one or two more jumps. There's also not a single energy source in the current time period that can keep up with the amount of power that the computer draws, so replacing it isn't an option. Afterwards, the relative calm of the situation and being with Daru lead Suzuha to fall asleep, and Daru realizes that Suzuha will have to leave by the end of summer.

POV: Rintaro Okabe

Okabe is showing Maho around Akihabara before she leaves for America in a few days, along with [Kurisu]. She's taken in by the back alley electronic shops, and Maho and [Kurisu] both reminisce over making things when they were younger. Okabe finally gets her to leave after a while when he brings up food, but while they're thinking about where to go, Maho sees the crane games in an arcade and wants to go try them. The machine she stops in front of has plushies from an @channel meme, so he makes a reference, assuming Maho is an @channeler like Kurisu, but she just looks back at him confused, although [Kurisu] understood the reference. Apparently, this was the same stuffed animal that Kurisu had in her bedroom back in America, so she wanted to try to get one too. She also asks Okabe what the character is, since he seemed to know, but he feigns ignorance after [Kurisu] urges him not to tell her. Although Maho seems confident at first, apparently she's never played a crane game before, so she quickly gets frustrated after a couple of failed attempts and storms off.

She goes to play a racing game that she's much more practiced at to destress with the last of her money. Meanwhile, [Kurisu] urges Okabe to try to win the stuffed animal for Maho. He's not that confident, but ends up winning it after a couple of tries. When he goes to find Maho, he finds a crowd around her as she's just set a new high score without even noticing. when she finishes and notices the crowd behind her, she starts to panic, but Okabe comes to pull her out of it. When they get outside, he gives the stuffed animal to her, and she happily accepts, explaining that after Kurisu died, her mom had kept the stuffed animal in her own bedroom, but it had likely burned along with everything else during the house fire, so she wanted to give it to her as a present. Afterwards, Okabe asks if there's anywhere else that Maho wants to visit. Maho then asks [Kurisu] if she can leave them alone for a while, which she misunderstands as Maho finally being honest with her feelings. When [Kurisu] hangs up, Maho asks Okabe to take her to the Radio Building, where Kurisu had died.

They arrive at the Radio Building, and after a bit of hesitation, they both go in together. They work their way up the stairs to the 8th floor and arrive at the storeroom. Maho is frustrated that Kurisu died in a place like this. She brings up how they're spatially in the exact same location, but because of a slight difference in time, they are powerless to help. She brings up how Okabe asked [Kurisu] about making a time machine the first time they met and how she'd gladly volunteer to be the first test subject if he found out how to make one. Okabe can't tell if she's joking, but doesn't appreciate the irony in her statement either way, considering there's currently a time machine at the top of the building they're in right now. Maho then presses Okabe for more details on how Kurisu died. Okabe tries to avoid the question, but then she brings up Dr. Nakabachi's conference at the Radio Building and his connections to Russia, the fire at Kurisu's house, and the fact that any information on Dr. Nakabachi on the internet has been purged over the past 6 months. She then asks again if Okabe is hiding any information about Kurisu. He tells her that she shouldn't get involved, but she says that it's way too late for that now, and wonders if the reason that they were attacked might not have been because of her, since she has some of Kurisu's belongings. Okabe then made the connection - Maho had been the one to request that Daru hack into Kurisu's laptop, which she confirms. She hadn't told Okabe earlier, since she didn't know him that well at first, and it seemed that he was hiding something, plus she didn't realize that he and Daru knew each other until later. Okabe realizes that the laptop could contain Kurisu's original paper for the time machine, and the drastic implications of that and the danger that could put everyone in, so he decides to call Daru to try to get the laptop from him. He calls him and asks to meet in person to discuss information regarding the password. Daru wants to have the discussion in the evening, but after insisting to meet now instead of later, Daru admits that he's actually at his job, which can be a little dangerous, but ends up sending him the address and telling him to meet him there.

They find themselves in an alley in front of a door with a sign crudely advertising a small cosplay shop. When they enter, it's very cramped, and not very appealing, even to it's theoretical core demographic. It's also not the location that Maho met Daru in last time. Suddenly, Daru appears from the back of the shop, not even fazing the man at the counter. He's surprised that Okabe arrived with Maho, but welcomes them both into the back room, hidden behind a rack of costumes and a curtain. The back room is even more cramped and dusty, with six monitors all showing security camera feeds of the earlier room, and various boxes and trash scattered all over the place. Daru explains that he's the 'leader' of a group of part-timers for underground places like these and they let him use their offices for his secret job in exchange.

[Gehenna's Stigma Route]: [Kurisu] calls right before they can start talking about the laptop and tells them that someone has raided both the lab's office and Maho's hotel room. Okabe reassures her that he and Daru will look out for her before hanging up. He quickly explains to Daru that they're likely after Kurisu's laptop and that they should take it and leave. Daru grabs a case off of one of the racks and opens it, pulling out the laptop before they leave. As they start to get far away from the building they notice a large American car pull up next to it with three men dressed in all black coming out of it. Maho is having trouble processing that this is actually happening while Daru wonders how they even found this place. Okabe asks just to make sure that Daru didn't mess up, but Daru assures him he hasn't made any mistakes. Okabe then says it's more likely that they've been following Maho, if they've already gone to her office and hotel. Maho then calls the professor to warn him.

Okabe had taken Maho to Faris's apartment, since it was likely safer than anywhere else they could go, being on the top floor of a building in the center of Akihabara. Faris offered them food and a place to stay for the night, although Daru went back to the Lab to see Suzuha. Once they sit down to talk about what to do about the laptop, Okabe immediately says they should destroy it. Maho is surprised by how determined he seems, but she says that she wants to try to crack the password and see what's on there first if possible. Okabe explains that there isn't any time for that, but Maho wants to preserve what Kurisu left them. Okabe tells her he thought she'd be more logical but Maho responds by saying she didn't think he's be this cold, which gets to Okabe. Maho realizes that something happened to him related to Kurisu and tries to pressure him into telling her about it again, but he keeps dodging the question.

Okabe then brings the conversation back to the laptop and how it's at the center of an international power struggle. Maho questions this exaggeration, but Okabe brings everything that happened today, as well as the fire at Kurisu's house, the fake FBI agent at the lab in America, and the attack on them at the hotel, and that it can't all be a coincidence. Maho agrees that it's a lot, but an international power struggle is still a big stretch, but then Okabe says that John Titor's prophecy is going to come true. Maho hadn't heard the name before, so Okabe explains that they were a time traveler that first appeared on the internet 10 years ago from 2036 that said World War Three would start in 2015 because of the time machine. Maho thinks he's joking, but Okabe then keeps going and explains that Dr. Nakabachi is Kurisu's father, and that she might've been involved in the time travel paper he published, meaning that there would be many people after her laptop.

After taking a little bit to process everything, Maho explains that she also thought that someone was after Kurisu's laptop, but not because of a time travel paper, but to use Amadeus for military purposes. She explains that Kurisu often saw people that looked like they were from the DoD around the lab a lot, even though they wouldn't have a reason to be there. She explains to Okabe some potential applications of Amadeus in the military like copying a pilot's memories to have them pilot drones or forcibly alter the memories of soldiers to remove their ethical considerations during missions. Okabe asks Maho if the US military is involved in researching Amadeus, and Maho confirms that they're not, leading Okabe to mutter something about that happening in another worldline. Maho asks him what that meant, but he brushes it off. Seeing as she likely won't get any more information out of him, and she can't crack the password on Kurisu's laptop, she leaves the laptop with him.

Two days later, she goes back to the lab to meet with Dr. Leskinen and he immediately gives her a hug when he sees her. They were both going back to America tomorrow, so they'd come to get their things. Apparently the police hadn't found the culprit, but also nothing else had happened over the past few days. They spend a while reminiscing on their time in Japan and Maho is glad she got to see where Kurisu was in the end, although she's left with more questions than answers, which leads her to ask Dr. Leskinen about what they're doing with Okabe and his status as a tester for Amadeus. After thinking it over for a bit, Dr. Leskinen decides to let him keep being a tester, since it's led to some interesting results so far, and he trusts him. Plus, that way they can keep in touch. Maho wonders why the professor is so attached to Okabe. The next day, Okabe comes to the airport to see them off and is surprised when the professor tells him that he can continue being a tester for Amadeus, then Maho and Dr. Leskinen leave for America. Six months go by since then.

Chapter Title Explanation[]

SG0stigmachptitle

"Gehenna's Stigma" chapter title design

私秘鏡裏のスティグマ –Gehenna's Stigma– (Shihikyouri no Sutiguma, Stigma of Behind the Hidden Mirror)

The word “stigma” is used in the sense of a mark of wrongness/criminality. This is pressed upon an individual by another/others and affects said individual’s social existence.[8]

The English half of the title, “Gehenna’s Stigma”, gives it a sense of repugnance and taboo. Gehenna is a name from the Bible that refers to the Valley of Hinnom where human sacrifices were burned to Canaanite gods. -The name and its burning fire later acquired the connotation of eternal torture/punishment and Hell.[9]- As a symbol, it brings forth the feelings and mental images of human death, burnt bodies, and depravity. “Gehenna’s Stigma” can therefore be interpreted as a “taboo mark”.[8]

In the Japanese half of the title, though the first part “私秘鏡裏” (Shihikyouri) should be read as kanji on'yomi as other titles, but its meaning is not that intuitive. However, the characters can be interpreted as “the me hidden behind/in the back of/within the mirror”.[10] Also, the characters for "mirror"(鏡) and "back"(裏), in this instance together pronounced "kyouri", are similar in sound to the word "表裏"(hyouri), which means "two-sides" or an "inside and outside".[11][8] It refers to Kagari Shiina who is a two-sided character in the story. Just like how a mirror surface shows not what is behind it, there is more behind what people readily see of her.

As a pawn in Leskinen’s conspiracy, she is manipulated and made to fraudulently pose as Yuki Amane, though her own true feelings and intentions are completely different. Leskinen holds this power over her by committing the taboo deed of overwriting individual personality via brainwashing. He poses as a people-loving university professor, but in truth behind his outer appearance is a real mad scientist of Strategic Focus.

The title ultimately describes how Kagari suffers and piles up crimes under the “stigma/mark” which Leskinen forces upon her, and as she is burned by the fire of Gehenna, it is already no longer possible to save her.[8]

Translation of the ending's quote:

The universe has a beginning, but no end. —Infinite.
The stars too have beginnings, but their power accompanies their decline. —Finite.
It the wise who are the most foolish. History has taught us as much.
The fish of the sea know not the world of the land. Were they to possess wisdom, they too would experience decline.
It is more absurd that humans should surpass the speed of light than it is that fish should start living on the land.
This concerns those who have defied God’s final warning—

An epigraph of their ardor.
